Celebrating Breaking: The Upcoming Olympic Sport
Breakdance, also known as “breaking” or b-boying/b-girling, is more than just a hobby – it’s an art form. After decades of pushing for it to be recognized as an official Olympic sport, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has finally announced that breaking will be included in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This marks a major victory for bboys and bgirls around the world and opens up exciting possibilities for the future of this unique dance style.
What Is Breaking?
Breaking is an acrobatic street dance style that can be traced back to 1970s New York City. It focuses on improvisation and self-expression and includes moves such as headspins, freezes, glides, toprock footwork, power moves, and more. It has since evolved into a global phenomenon with its own competitive events like Battle of the Year, Freestyle Session, and Red Bull BC One.
What Does This Mean For Breaking?
By being included in the Olympics, breaking will have increased visibility and accessibility around the world. There will now be more opportunities for aspiring breakers to showcase their talent and make a name for themselves in the scene. Additionally, it could lead to greater recognition for some of breaking’s pioneers — many of whom are now well into their 50s — who have been advocating for this moment for decades.
Breaking In The Olympics
The Paris 2024 Olympics will feature two breaking events: one individual event where dancers battle each other one-on-one; and one team event where dancers compete together as part of a larger group battle. These events are still being developed but they are sure to provide plenty of exciting moments when they debut at the games next year!
The inclusion of breaking in the 2024 Paris Olympics marks an exciting new chapter in the history of this beloved dance style. Not only does it provide greater recognition and opportunity for aspiring breakers around the world; but it also provides another platform through which these talented artists can express themselves creatively while competing against others at the highest level possible. We look forward to seeing what amazing performances await us during next year’s games!
